Alina Kopytsia

(Ukrainian, b. 1983. Lives and works in Zurich)

Alina holds a BA (2020) and MFA (2023) from the Zurich University of the Arts, as well as a BA in Fine Arts (2003) and MA in Fine and Applied Arts (2006) from the National Technical University of Ukraine (Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.)

Alina works primarily in embroidery and textile collage, an organic form of expression deeply connected to her family’s history in the clothing industry. She embraces the resistance of these unyielding materials as a source of creative energy. Her figurative compositions are rooted in storytelling, often drawing on personal memories while also engaging with art history, mythology, and contemporary culture. Through humour, irony, and subtle visual twists, she reshapes conventional perceptions, opening reflections on gender stereotypes, social norms, and sexual conventions. More recently, motherhood has become a new lens in her practice, shaping series such as The Mammal’s Milk, which explores intimacy, vulnerability, and strength, and Quality Time, which examines connection and emotional resonance as both personal and collective experience.

Recent solo exhibitions include: Bed Sheets Tales, Francesco Pantaleone Gallery, Palermo (2024); Couples Only, Galerie Ladons, Hamburg (2024); and Plains of Ambiguity, Ruettimann Contemporary, Zürich (2022). Group exhibitions include: The Arcadian Dream, Spurs Gallery, Beijing (2024); Three New Positions, Galerie Peter Kilchmann, Zürich (2023); and A Space of One’s Own, PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv (2018).

Her work is held in several public collections, including the Kunstsammlung der Stadt Zürich, the Kunstsammlung des Kantons Zürich, and the Uppsala Municipality Art Collection, Sweden.
