Arno Mathies
(Swiss, b. 1986. Lives and works in Nyon)
Arno Mathies is a Swiss designer whose work is shaped by the outcomes of production processes and the use of 3d assisted softwares and technologies. He seeks to question the function of objects in space by exploring their form and uses. His recent work considers the use of 3d printing as a finality for producing and communicating his practice.
“My work as a product designer situates itself on the intersection between Art and Design, Furniture and Sculpture, the unique and the multiple. Since the beginning of my design practice, the work has focused on a curiosity for producing furniture and objects, by challenging their purpose.”
After completing his MA in Design Products at the Royal College of Art, Mathies made several projects, Folding Boat and Folding Sled, which were nominated for the Federal Swiss Design Awards in 2013 & 2014. Panel Discussion, the result of a year-long residency at Villa Noailles won in 2016, was awarded the Swiss Design Award in 2017 in collaboration with Max Frommeld. The project is a research for drawing with MDF (particle wood panels) and for its communal proposal; benches as a hommage to the gardens of the Villa Noailles.
In 2014, Mathies opened his own studio in Geneva, specialising in design consultancy, scenography, and focusing on personal projects and
private commissions.
He was awarded two ProHelvetia grants for the creation of troislignes, a tableware brand using computer language to rethink the dressing of dishes. The project remains active and continues to expand its range of products to accompany the first pieces.
He is currently working with HolzerKobler Architekturen and has participated on several of their exhibitions in Geneva and Lyon (MEG, MICR Geneva, Musée des Confluences Lyon) over the past years.
In parallel since 2016, Mathies is co-director with Rosario Hurtado from the duo El Ultimo Grito based in London, UK of the MA Space & Communication at HEAD Geneva (CH), a leading program exploring space and design as a means for critical communication.
