Laura Thiong-Toye
(Swiss, b. 1986. Lives and works in Geneva)
Thiong-Toye holds bachelor and master degrees from the Haute École d’Art et de Design HEAD - Genève.
Thiong-Toye primarily uses acrylic and ink in her paintings to play around with colour, from harmonious combinations to vibrating frictions. Curious to revisit the popular art historical subject matter of still life, vases and flowers became recurring motifs in Thiong-Toye’s works. These neglected everyday objects - amongst others - are transformed into lively centrepieces dialoguing with numerous other elements. Referencing fellow artists, personal experiences, a variety of places, times and socio-cultural categories, Thiong-Toye’s works convey an amusing playground where unexpected encounters and conversations occur.
