Léonard von Muralt

(Swiss, b. 1989. Lives and works in Fribourg)

Léonard von Muralt is a Swiss artist and musician based in Fribourg. He holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from HEAD Geneva, and develops a practice of sculpture, installation, and painting on wood, centered on vernacular and decorative forms. His work explores their persistence, transformation, and critical resonance within contemporary art, drawing inspiration from poyas, Romanesque interlacing, ancient mosaics, and the repetitive gestures of Do It Yourself practices. He is also engaged with art in public space and won a competition for a monument dedicated to Nelson Mandela at the Bureau d’installation publique (BIP).

At the end of his studies, he was awarded the Head Art Galerie Prize by Art Bärtschi (Wilde), a collaboration that continued over several years.

In 2017, he took part in a Pro Helvetia research residency in Johannesburg with Gilles Furtwängler and Simon Acevedo, which resulted in the album, book, and film Searching for Beauty.
