Mathieu Dafflon
(Swiss, b. 1987. Lives and works in Basel. Represented by Wilde Gallery.)
Dafflon studied at École des Arts Appliqués and Haute École d’Art et de Design HEAD – Genève and spent six month at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore (USA). He graduated from HEAD Genève in 2011 and with MFA degree from ZhdK in 2023.
Navigating between the realms of abstraction and figuration, Dafflon’s work reflects his deep-rooted passion for painting. Influenced by art history, his works are cleverly appropriated and reinterpreted with a touch of irony and irreverence. He skilfully manipulates painting materials to invite viewers to reflect on conventional representations and reproduction. Through his illusionistic painting technique, Dafflon cleverly blurs the line between tangible objects and visual illusions. From a distance, his monumental pieces can easily be mistaken for photographs, blurring the distinction between paintings as physical entities and as visual representations.
In 2014 Dafflon was awarded the Prix de la Ville de Genève and in 2016 the Prix Hirzel. His work has been exhibited in several solo exhibitions, including at Wilde Gallery in Geneva and Basel, Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp in Cully, and Salle Crosnier at Palais de l’Athénée in Geneva. Additionally, his work has been featured in group exhibitions at Centre d’Art Contemporain, Spielact Festival, and MAH – Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, all located in Geneva. His work is part of the collection of FMAC – Fonds d’art contemporain de la Ville de Genève and Collection Banque Mirabaud.
