Planting Roots.

14 September - 26 October 2024
Private residence, Old Town Geneva

A group exhibition with works by

Céline Ducret, Harald Erath, Luca Gianola, Marianne Herjean, and Elzara Oiseau

Returning to where Bahay Contemporary first planted its roots, this anniversary exhibition explored the profound and personal notions of identity and origin. The patterns and ondulations of Céline Ducret's textile and sculptural works, deriving from her childhood passion for water - the origin and essence of all beings -, reflected Elzara Oiseau's sea waves wire installations around the word play in French of 'la mer' and 'la mère'. In turn, these installations, representative of one’s longing for their homeland and the uncertainty of reuniting with it, spoke to the experience of loss which was the starting point of Harald Erath's Memento series. His paintings of marble and stone, as an ode to the culture of remembrance and our commemoration of beloved ones, highlighted Marianne Herjean's own cherished person: her mother. The source of inspiration for her series Pao, colorful abstract depictions following nomadic travels on islands reminiscent of her mother’s childhood home in Polynesia. Travels abroad and their impact on our identity were also at the heart of Luca Gianola's watercolor drawings, recalling time spent earlier this year in Japan, coincidentally at the very same place where his grandmother once resided. A poetic dialogue between each artist and their works, Planting Roots invited visitors to pause and reflect on their own meaningful existence.
