The Secret Garden.

26-31 December 2023
WEGA Bookstore, Zermatt

Bahay Contemporary’s first winter destination: Zermatt.

Inspired by the eponymous children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, which explores the wonders of nature and its influence on human spirit, The Secret Garden showcased three female artists who each in their own way find inspiration in nature. From Marianne Herjean’s lasting impressions of fleeting sunrises, to Xinyi Fox Hu’s exploration of resonating and reverberating tales told by fictive creatures and Tetiana Kartasheva’s childhood memories of a paradisiac land… each work shown reflected the artists’ unique transformation by nature.

Hidden in plain sight among the background of the books of the WEGA Bookstore, representative of the lush and vibrant snowcapped and illuminated greenery currently surrounding Zermatt, the works on display were an invitation to reflect on the present moment, from what one sees, hears and feels to the distant memories the present can provoke.
